This is a randomized study. It’s a Phase III, perspective,
randomized clinical trial, really designed to compare conventional
axillary surgery with sentinel node. The patient population that
sentinel node surgery is applicable to is in the patient population
that have clinically negative nodes, so all the patients are going
to have clinically negative nodes. The other thing is — since
most people have negative nodes, pathologically negative nodes —
if we could target that group, which is pretty much a safe way to
go, we would cover the majority of patients in eliminating axillary
dissections. So, it does limit the randomization to those patients
who are actually pathologically negative. That means that the sentinel
node has to be pathologically negative for them to be sentinel node
only. So even though they’ve been randomized to a possible
sentinel node only arm, it’s only if it’s pathologically
negative, the sentinel nodes, that they don’t have an axillary
dissection.
