Dr. Krag: The statistics are that 80% of patients have some problem,
whether it’s minor or major, 80%. And the reason is that the
psychological issues related to having breast cancer are just huge,
and so if somebody is putting on their clothes and every day as
they pull their sleeve over, they feel that tingly nature, a little
bell goes off, "You’ve got breast cancer." And so, it’s
a constant reminder to people. Probably anywhere between somewhere
just below 10% to 30% of patients have some form of edema that’s
either intermittent or permanent, and out of that group there’s
probably a third that have real issues in their life with edema
and have to deal with it on a fairly constant basis.

Love: How about pain and numbness?
Dr.
Krag: Almost everybody has pain and numbness. Probably, the numbers
in there actually are probably around 70% to 90%, depends a lot
on what the surgeon does in the axilla. If they go to great lengths
to preserve the nerves that feed that area, which some people do
and a lot of people don’t, then that will decrease it somewhat,
but even with that nerve skeletonized, people still have pain and
numbness in a certain percentage of the cases.
