We
have to continue thinking about surgery as a temporary treatment
for breast cancer. The concept that surgery is not the ideal treatment
is something that’s hard to get across because it’s really
the only effective tool we have to eliminate cancer in the traditional
way, but this is a cultural thing. You see cancer — step on
it, kill it, squash it. And now we understand cancer is a disorder
of growth. There are lots of surgical diseases that aren’t
entirely surgical anymore; peptic ulcer among them. Maybe the complications
are, but we understand that the process that leads up to it is treatable
and that surgery can be pre-empted.
