Dr.
Loprinzi: Soy phytoestrogens, in our hands, did not show any benefit
whatsoever. We were somewhat surprised. We had been hopeful that
it would have been beneficial, but the actual numbers were worse
in the soy group versus the placebo group, not statistically significantly
so, and also there is actually no evidence in our hands that the
soy preparation we used, which was equivalent to three 8oz glasses
of soy milk per day, that there was any benefit there. Vitamin E,
we did see a bit of benefit, but not very much. It amounted to about
one hot flash reduction per person, per day. So if a person is not
having too much in the way of hot flashes then vitamin E is a reasonable
choice, given that it is readily available, it is inexpensive, it
is virtually non-toxic. In placebo-controlled trials any toxicity
you get is equivalent in the placebo group versus the vitamin E
group, and several good studies have shown that.
Dr.
Love: Whats the dose?
Dr.
Loprinzi: 800 I.U.s a day is what we utilized in our trial,
and you get the placebo effect plus a little bit more. So thats
a reasonable thing for people to start off with.
