Patients
would say to me: "Gee Dr. G, its wonderful you dont
have to do a mastectomy. Im so happy we can do a lumpectomy,
but do you have to remove my lymph nodes? So and so had her lymph
nodes removed and now her arm is all swollen up." We thought about
it and only about a third or quarter of the time in early breast
cancer were the lymph nodes involved so the other three quarters
of time were removing normal lymph nodes. Its hard to
imagine that removing normal lymph nodes is helpful. So the work
was being done in a laboratory by Don Morton in melanoma. They were
having great success with the technique, and we tried it in breast
cancer. It was very difficult to get going. In breast cancer the
lymphatics of the parenchyma are not as rich as the skin but ultimately
it worked.
