Meet the Professors: A case-based discussion
on the integration of chemotherapy into the management of metastatic
breast cancer
STATEMENT OF NEED / TARGET AUDIENCE
Management of metastatic breast cancer in women is one of the
many challenges faced by medical oncologists. As new data continues
to emerge from clinical trials of chemotherapeutic, endocrine and
biologic agents in the metastatic setting, oncologists must integrate
this information into clinical practice in order to provide optimal
patient care. To bridge the gap between research and practice,
this activity is designed as a roundtable discussion in which community
oncologists discuss their challenging cases of metastatic breast
cancer with one another and with research leaders.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able
to:
- Describe and implement a management strategy integrating chemotherapy,
endocrine therapy and biologic therapy in the treatment of metastatic
breast cancer in women.
- Determine the clinical implications of emerging data on the
use of platinum analogs in combination with chemotherapy in the
management of metastatic breast cancer in women.
- Determine the role of trastuzumab as part of these combination
chemotherapeutic regimens for patients diagnosed with HER2-positive
metastatic breast cancer.
- Determine the appropriate use of follow-up studies to monitor
progression in patients with primary and metastatic breast cancer.
EDUCATIONAL METHOD
To receive CME credit, the participant should listen to the CDs
or tapes, review the monograph and complete the post-test and evaluation
form.
